Job Overview

Construct, assemble, maintain, and repair metal components to create structures as required.   Align structures or plate sections to assemble frames or components, following workshop drawings.  Work involves use of hand and power tools, torches, welders, MIGs and TIGs. Job requires physical fitness, accuracy, and strength to handle materials, tools and equipment.  Other duties may include cleaning and application of protective coating to steel components.

Job Tasks

Factory Operations

  • Operate cranes, hoists, or other moving  or lifting equipment
  • Inspect industrial or commercial equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Maintain mechanical equipment.
  • Clean equipment, using scrapers, wire brushes, and cleaning solvents.
  • Clean equipment or facilities.

Drawings

  • Study workshop drawings to determine locations, relationships, or dimensions of parts.
  • Review workshop drawings or specifications to determine work requirements.

Fabrication

  • Mark reference points on construction materials.
  • Measure materials or objects for installation or assembly.
  • Locate and mark reference points for columns or plates on foundations, following blueprints and using straightedges, squares, transits, or measuring instruments.
  • Position, align, and secure structural parts or related assemblies to frames, following workshop drawings.
  • Position structural components.
  • Install metal structural components.
  • Bolt or MIG weld structures and parts together.
  • Weld metal components.
  • Lay out plate, sheet steel, or other heavy metal and locate and mark bending and cutting lines, using protractors, compasses, and drawing instruments or templates.
  • Shape or fabricate parts, using heavy-metalworking machines such as brakes, rolls, or drill presses.
  • Shape seams, joints, or irregular edges of structural parts to attain specified fit of parts, using cutting torches, hammers, files, or metalworking machines.
  • Fabricate parts or components.

Quality Assurance

  • Inspect assembled frames or individual components, to locate any defects.
  • Finish products by cleaning, polishing, filing or by applying protective or decorative coatings

Requirements

Minimum 1 years experience in Heavy Structural Steel Fabrication as shown in overview.

Must have Certificate III in Fabrication or Engineering.
