Your role:

A Gap Year in the Navy gives you an exciting taste of life in the ADF with just one year's commitment. You'll get paid for meaningful work, receive full Navy training, and enjoy memorable experiences – unlike anything you'd encounter in a regular gap year.

You'll get to experience life with the Commanding Officer's representative - the point person for executing the safe navigation and general operations of a submarine.

Your 12-month experience is divided into stages. First, you'll get paid to learn the military and job-specific skills you need for your role. Then you'll post to a unit to apply your newly learned skills and you may have opportunities to travel around Australia to take part in domestic exercises and operations. Plus, you'll be supported by professional and enthusiastic Navy personnel throughout your experience.

After finishing your Gap Year program, you can choose to continue a career in the Navy or you can use your new skills and experiences in future careers outside the ADF.

Your duties may include:

  • understudying and shadowing a Maritime Warfare Officer Submariner onboard a submarine

  • conducting training within submarine simulators.

Benefits of an ADF Gap Year in the Navy:

  • Unique 12-month experience

  • Opportunities to travel Australia

  • Receive world-class Navy training

  • Make lifelong friends

  • Experience life at sea and ashore

  • Develop leadership and management skills

  • Enjoy a good salary package

  • 16.4% superannuation – huge 4.9% over the Australian standard

  • Gain valuable work and life experience

  • Free medical and dental

Salary:

You'll be paid while you train, and on completion of your initial military training, you'll enjoy a salary package starting from $47,705, plus 16.4% superannuation.
