AEMO at the Heart of Energy
AEMO is Australia's independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO's purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.
About The Team
The System Design division at AEMO leads the planning and transformation of Australia's power system, driving the shift to renewables and electrification. Within this division, the Onboarding and Connections Group oversees the full generator connection process for the National Electricity Market. The specialised Technical Solutions team brings expertise in emerging technologies, complex connections, and industry reform—serving as a key link between equipment manufacturers and AEMO.
About The Role
In this role, you'll lead technical projects supporting the connection of diverse new generation technologies—such as wind, solar, hydro, storage, and hydrogen—to the National Electricity Market. Collaborating with key industry stakeholders including network service providers, developers, manufacturers, and regulators, you'll drive power system modelling, address operational challenges, and implement improvements to the generator connections process. You'll also mentor junior staff and have opportunities to build your industry profile through forums and working groups.
This is a permanent, full-time role reporting to the Technical Solutions Manager and can be based in all states.
What You Will Be Doing
- Lead and deliver small to medium projects supporting the connection of new generation assets to the power network.
- Strengthen AEMO's technical collaboration with industry stakeholders, ensuring constructive and outcome-focused resolution of connection issues.
- Provide expert technical advice and make fact-based, well-documented decisions regarding power system modelling, performance standards, and system stability.
- Mentor and guide technical staff and project stakeholders to build capability within project teams.
- Drive a service-oriented culture through effective client partnerships and strong industry collaboration.
- Support and contribute to regulatory changes enabling the integration of large-scale renewable energy projects into the NEM.
- Prepare clear, high-quality communications for both technical and non-technical audiences on key issues and project outcomes.
- Enhance AEMO's reputation as a trusted partner and develop strategic frameworks for integrating diverse generation and storage technologies into the NEM.
What You Will Bring To The Role
- Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline relevant to power systems analysis
- Minimum 4 years' experience in power systems analysis and engineering
- Proven ability to lead and deliver small to medium technical projects with a service-oriented approach
- Strong experience managing generator connection processes and resolving power system performance issues
- Demonstrated skills in negotiating complex technical issues with diverse stakeholders
- Sound understanding of commercial and legal factors impacting large-scale infrastructure projects
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical audiences
In return some of our benefits
to you
- Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options
- Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.
- Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
- Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).
- Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
