About Haematology & Flow Cytometry
The Haematology department is committed to promoting the highest levels of quality pathology services to the Austin hospital and surrounding health care facilities.
Working as a reference laboratory for regional sites, the Heidelberg laboratory receives samples from many different specialities including maternity and neonates, liver and kidney transplantation, haematology and oncology and the emergency department.
About the role
Reporting to the Principal Scientist, as a Grade 1/2 Scientist you will work within our flow cytometry laboratory as part of the haematology team, who are passionate about providing best practice care for our patients.
A regular day will see you:
- Ensuring the smooth running of the Beckman Coulter DxFlex flow cytometers throughout the day, including maintenance and running / checking QC
- Completing all aspects of immunophenotyping, including sample preparation, staining, acquisition, and data analysis using established protocols
- Analysing flow cytometry data, identifying abnormal cell populations, and interpreting results
- Liaising with haematology registrars and consultants, in person and on the phone
- Taking appropriate action in response to critical or unexpected results and communicating effectively with Pathologists
About you
You will be someone who has excellent communication skills and a commitment to quality in haematology and the transfusion laboratory. You will bring energy and drive to your work and have a keen interest in developing your skillset.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine or equivalent and/or relevant science degree
- Knowledge of Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs
- Ability to interact and communicate effectively with colleagues including nursing and medical staff
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and as part of a team
- The ability to prioritise and to cope with stressful and emergency situations
- Ability to cope with change
- Experience in Flow Cytometry and Haematology
