The role

This exciting role supports the Marine Team, with day-to-day pilot vessel operations, including conducting pilot transfers and general maintenance, as well as linesboat operations in both Devonport and Burnie. While this role reports to the Manager Pilotage Services and is set in a collaborative team environment, it is expected that you will be highly capable to work autonomously. This position plays an important role in assisting vessel arrivals and departures, and the key responsibilities of the role must be undertaken in an efficient and co-operative manner.

Key role responsibilities

  • Provide a level of marine expertise, knowledge and operational support to effectively and safely undertake all tasks associated with shipping and maintenance operations.
  • Communicate clearly and precisely with management, duty personnel, and Port Control when performing normal day to day tasks.
  • Be able to provide assistance, which may arise from time to time, with port emergency responses including training as required.
  • Work with stevedores, agents, customers and all port users on issues that directly affect the divisions and Corporation's operations.
  • Provide assistance and services to vessels whilst in port
  • Perform planned maintenance as per schedule and maintain a high standard of vessel husbandry.
  • Record all logs and maintenance activities in the online marine management system.
  • Perform any range of relevant duties associated with operational requirements according to skills, qualifications and training as directed by the divisions' management team.

What you can bring to the role

  • Demonstrated ability to provide professional customer service.
  • Proven strong verbal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven computer skills and ability to learn new systems.
  • Display the ability to manage resources and time in order to assist with the planning and organisation of work to adequately discharge a wide range of duties.
  • Demonstrated understanding of maritime regulations including the National Standards for Commercial Vessels, and DCV operating requirements including maritime Safety Management Systems.
  • Current knowledge of OH&S requirements and responsibilities in the workplace and a demonstrated commitment to safe working procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work flexibly and with limited supervision.
  • Ability to participate in agreed 24/7 roster arrangements to facilitate the safe and efficient movement of shipping within TasPorts.
  • Previous experience in a shipping or operations environment would be deemed a desirable advantage, including knowledge of port emergency response procedures.

What you will have (essential)

  • Ability to gain and maintain a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC).
  • Possession of current Master Class 5 certification.
  • Possession of current MED II certification.
  • Possession of current Provide First Aid certification.
  • Current unrestricted Tasmanian drivers licence.
