Liquor Department Lead – Part-Time (Essendon)

We're The Happy Apple, a proudly independent, family-owned grocer with four stores across Melbourne's west. Known for our beautiful produce, artisan products, and friendly service, we're now looking for a Liquor Department Lead to join our Essendon team.

This is a part-time role (20 hours per week) ideal for someone who loves quality wine, beer, and spirits, takes pride in presentation, and enjoys connecting with the local community.

About the Role

As our Liquor Department Lead, you'll take ownership of the day-to-day operations of the liquor section — from ordering and merchandising to customer service and compliance.

You'll be responsible for maintaining a well-presented, engaging, and compliant liquor department that reflects The Happy Apple's high standards and values.

Working closely with the Store Leader and Liquor Buyer, you'll help deliver a beautifully curated, community-focused liquor offering.

What You'll Do
  • Oversee daily operations of the liquor department, ensuring compliance with Liquor Licensing and RSA regulations.
  • Manage product ordering, deliveries, pricing, and stock control.
  • Build strong relationships with suppliers and coordinate product schedules.
  • Ensure product displays are inviting, compliant, and aligned with store promotions.
  • Support tastings, seasonal promotions, and marketing initiatives.
  • Lead by example in delivering knowledgeable, friendly, and responsible customer service.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organised workspace in line with OH&S standards.
  • Report on sales, stock levels, and opportunities for improvement.
What You'll Bring
  • Previous experience in retail liquor, grocery, or hospitality.
  • Sound product knowledge (or keen interest) in wine, beer, and spirits.
  • Strong organisational skills with attention to detail and compliance.
  • Proven ability to deliver outstanding customer service.
  • Experience using systems like Worldsmart, Metcash, or Tanda.
  • Current RSA (required) and driver's licence.
  • Forklift and First Aid certificates desirable (training support available).
