Senior Project Officer - Combat Sports

  • Salary: $113,022 - $136,747 (Plus Superannuation)
  • Fixed term position until 30 June 2026

The Role

As a Senior Project Officer - Combat Sports, you will support the Senior Manager to manage additional critical portfolio activities including Coronial inquests, VCAT matters, support to the Professional Boxing and Combat Sports Board (the Board) and its Sub-Committees and timely and quality advice on matters relevant to the regulation of combat sports.

You will liaise across teams to effectively coordinate various requests and government processes, Cabinet and parliamentary matters; corporate reporting; and provides support in the preparation and timely delivery of high-quality briefs and correspondence o the Executive Director, Deputy Secretary, Secretary and Minister's Office.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Support the Senior Manager through the preparation and review of high quality and timely briefings on matters relevant to the Combat Sports Team. Ensure work is consistent with department and Government requirements, practices and protocols.
  • Manage relationships and engage with critical internal and external stakeholders such as State and Territory Combat Sport Commissions and Government Authorities in relation to highly complex issues. Develop strong working relationships and processes between CSU colleagues, the Office of the Executive Director, Community Sport and Recreation, Office of the Deputy Secretary, and Minister's Office to co-ordinate requested information to a high quality between relevant offices.
  • Convene and provide secretariat support at the monthly Board and its Sub-Committee meetings. Ensure processes are conducted in accordance with governance requirements, including preparation and coordination of agendas, preparation and distribution of e-papers, accurate minute taking and recording of all decisions and action items, monitoring and follow-up of action items.
  • Provide critical administrative support to the Board including Board member appointments, review and induction processes, Ministerial Statement of Expectations reporting and other important ongoing governance requirements.
  • Support additional time-limited activities such as the Team's involvement in Coronial Inquests and VCAT matters by ensuring timelines are met through the provision of high-quality accurate advice.
  • Lead monitoring and evaluation activities that develop and enhance the evidence-base for initiatives delivered through Sport and Recreation Victoria.

The Team

The position of Senior Project Officer - Combat Sports will work within Outdoor Recreation, Combat Sports and Strategic Policy branch, which sits within Sport and Experience Economy group.

The Sport and Experience Economy Group delivers programs and initiatives to support positive experiences and a sense of belonging through sport, tourism and events and outdoor recreation - sectors that make Victoria a recognised leader from the grassroots level to the international stage. This is achieved by supporting the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events and the Minister for Community Sport in the delivery of sport and tourism infrastructure, and through programs and policies that strengthen the capacity of sport and experience economy organisations, reduce barriers to participation and engagement, support world-class events, and reinforce the role that vibrant sport and experience economy sectors play in growing the Victorian economy, supporting jobs and building stronger communities.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have the following skills and experience:

  • Experience with and sound understanding of the broad policy and operational issues facing the Victorian Government, together with thorough understanding of policy development, and Victorian Government Parliamentary and Cabinet processes.
  • Effective Communication: Prepares complex briefs, letters, emails and reports using clear, concise and grammatically correct language; Edits written communications to ensure they contain the information necessary to achieve their purpose and meet audience needs; Ensures appropriate style and formats are used; Confidently conveys ideas and information in a clear and interesting way; Clearly understands the target audience and the objectives of the communication; Handles difficult and sensitive communications well.
  • Stakeholder Management: Establishes and maintains relationships with people at all levels both internal and external to government; promotes harmony and consensus through diplomatic handling of conflicting positions; forges useful partnerships with people across business areas, functions and organisations; builds trust through consistent actions, values and communication; minimises surprises.
  • Flexibility and Analytical Ability: Ability to work across a range of priorities simultaneously in a dynamic and fast paced environment. Managing competing priorities and working to varying timelines to meet business needs. Deals with concepts and complexity comfortably; Uses analytical and conceptual skills to reason through problems; Has creative ideas and can project how these can link to innovations.
  • Data Collection and Monitoring: Ability to analyse and understand data and information collected from initiatives and apply strategic insights to interpret information, which includes consideration of the broader strategic direction of the organisation.
