Senior Technical Specialist / High-Stakes Data Modelling / Solve real world problems with data

We're looking for a senior-level / director technical specialist to take the lead on high-impact projects
where complex data meets real-world consequences
. You'll be the embedded technical expert, working closely with domain specialists and stakeholders to design and build bespoke data models, calculation engines, and logic-driven solutions that stand up to regulatory and legal scrutiny.

This role would suit a quantitative developer, actuarial modeller, analytics engineer, or data specialist who enjoys building logic-heavy systems that need to be correct, traceable, and defensible, not just fast or flashy. You might come from finance, consulting, insurance, or tech, and be looking for something more meaningful than dashboards or models chasing conversion rates.

It's a role for someone who wants to stay deep in the technical layer, with autonomy and ownership — not business development, not people management, and not sales. You'll be the senior tech mind in the room, solving problems that have real-world financial and legal consequences, often at scale.

The work is
project-based and delivery-focused
, with multiple concurrent engagements running at once — much like a consulting environment — but without the sales targets, BD pressure, or travel.
You'll work directly with internal and external stakeholders on complex, high-impact data problems that require structured thinking and technical depth.

What you'll do

  • Design, build, and optimise custom
    Python and SQL-based data models
    to support high-stakes investigations, repayments, and reporting
  • Work with structured and messy data, often across multiple years and systems
  • Translate complex rule sets (e.g., regulatory frameworks, industrial awards, entitlements) into clear, testable, and maintainable logic
  • Ensure accuracy and traceability of outputs — your work may be reviewed in legal or compliance contexts
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts (legal, financial, operational) to scope, test, and validate solutions
  • Act as a technical lead for a small group of data professionals — providing guidance, mentorship, and architectural oversight without formal management responsibility

What you'll bring

  • Strong experience in Python and SQL — particularly for building data models, logic engines, or compliance frameworks
  • A background in quantitative modelling, financial engineering, actuarial science, or rule-based data processing
  • Ability to work with messy, incomplete, or inconsistent data, and to build systems that account for edge cases
  • A meticulous, systems-thinking mindset — you care about traceability, reproducibility, and defensibility of your code
  • Strong communication skills — able to explain assumptions, decisions, and logic in plain language
  • Motivation to do work that is intellectually challenging, rigorous, and socially impactful

Salary and benefits

  • $220,000–230,000 including super
  • Bonus potential up to 25%
