About The Role
Join AMSANT at an exciting time of growth and impact across the Northern Territory. We're looking for a Communications and Media Lead who can bring our stories, advocacy and sector strength to life.
In this role, you'll shape AMSANT's public voice, lead our digital channels, work closely with our external media agency, and help amplify the voices of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services across the NT. You'll help articulate complex policy and community issues into clear, powerful communications that influence government, support our members, and strengthen community-controlled health.

Responsibilities
Strategic communications (all audiences)
- Deliver AMSANT's communications strategy, ensuring clear and consistent messaging for:
- members and sector stakeholders
- internal teams and leadership
- external/public audiences
- Translate complex policy, research, and advocacy work into accessible, culturally safe communications tailored to these audiences.
- Work with the external media agency to align media-facing strategy with AMSANT priorities.
Media management
- In partnership with AMSANT's external media agency:
- coordinate with the agency on media releases, media pitches, campaigns, and media events.
- oversee media engagement with journalists, radio, print, digital and tv, jointly with the agency.
- prepare AMSANT spokespeople with talking points and briefings.
- manage emerging media issues and rapid-response communications with agency support.
- ensure media products reflect AMSANT values, sector priorities, and cultural responsibilities.
Member communications
- Support the Policy, Research and Advocacy team to coordinate and develop regular, high-quality communications specifically for AMSANT member ACCHSs, including:
- member updates and bulletins
- consultation materials
- advocacy summaries and calls to action
- Ensure communications reflect the needs, priorities, and voices of member services.
- Support the sector and members with messaging, case studies, and sector-wide narratives when relevant.
Internal communications
- Coordinate internal updates, staff announcements, and key organisational messaging.
- Support the CEO, and managers to communicate effectively across teams.
- Build internal templates, processes, and channels (e.g. intranet updates, staff newsletters, etc).
- Ensure information flows clearly and consistently across AMSANT divisions.
Digital communications
- Manage all AMSANT social media platforms, including content creation, scheduling, community management and analytics.
- Lead website content updates to ensure public-facing and member-facing information is current.
- Produce digital campaigns and storytelling that amplify ACCHS voices and advocacy strengths.
- Maintain AMSANT's digital tone, branding, and visual identity.
Editorial oversight
- Support the drafting, editing, and quality control all major AMSANT communication products:
- public-facing content (annual report, media releases, op-eds, speeches)
- member-facing content (sector updates, briefings)
- internal content (staff announcements, strategy updates)
- Work with the external media agency on public-facing creative and framing when needed.
- Ensure all content meets cultural, ethical, and governance standards.
Stakeholder engagement
- Serve as the primary AMSANT contact for the external media agency.
- Build collaborative relationships with relevant staff at members (ACCHSs) to source stories and support local communications.
- Coordinate with NT Government, NACCHO, PHNs and partners on cross-agency communications.
Key capabilities
- Ability to craft tailored communications for different audiences: external/public, member services, and internal staff.
- High-level writing, editing, and strategic messaging skills.
- Strong relationship management including with media, ACCHSs, and external agencies.
- Digital communication expertise with capacity to own social media end-to-end.
- Experience managing both public-facing media and internal/member communications.
Selection Requirements
Essential: experience and capability
- Demonstrated experience in communications, media, public affairs or a related field.
- Proven ability to develop and deliver multi-audience communications, including public-facing media products, member/stakeholder communications, and internal organisational updates.
- Demonstrated experience managing media engagement, including preparing media releases, coordinating interviews, and providing talking points and briefings.
- Experience working collaboratively with external agencies, particularly in media or strategic communications.
- Strong digital communications skills, including social media management, web content development, digital storytelling and analytics.
- Exceptional writing, editing and messaging skills, with the ability to translate complex policy and health information into accessible, compelling content.
- High-level judgement, political awareness and the ability to navigate sensitive or high-stakes issues.
- Excellent relationship-building skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders including ACCHOs, government, media and internal teams.
- Proficiency in relevant communications software and platforms including social media management tools, content management systems (CMS), email marketing platforms, media monitoring tools, Microsoft Office and basic design/layout platforms (e.g. Canva or Adobe suite).
- Strong organisational skills, with experience managing competing deadlines and coordinating multiple communication streams.
Essential: cultural competency
- Understanding of, or commitment to learning about, the principles of Aboriginal community control and the cultural, political and historical context of Aboriginal health.
- Ability to produce culturally appropriate communications and work respectfully with Aboriginal people, communities and organisations.
Desirable
- Graphic design or related skills.
- Experience in the Aboriginal health sector, government, community services or a peak-body environment.
- Knowledge of NT health and policy landscapes.
- Experience with crisis communications or rapid-response media.
- Additional information:
- Original qualifications must be available for viewing and copies to be kept on personnel file.
- Applications must have an Ochre Card and a Current Police Check and/or ability to obtain these prior to commencement.
- Applicants must be able and willing to undertake travel throughout the NT and Interstate (sometimes as a light aircraft passenger) and possess a C class Driver's Licence.
