Where you'll be working
An exciting opportunity is available with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) Centralised Intake team for an experienced mental health clinician. This role involves engaging with young people, their families/carers, and service providers via telephone and virtual care to ensure timely access to appropriate mental health services. CAMHS is a specialist service providing assessment and treatment for young people aged 0–17 and their families/carers across the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNE LHD). Referrals typically involve young people experiencing complex and severe mental health issues that significantly affect their daily functioning and development. The location of this position is negotiable.
What you'll be doing
As a CAMHS Centralised Intake (CCI) clinician, you will use telephone and virtual care to provide comprehensive assessment, intake, and service linkage for young people and their carers within the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD). The CCI team plays a vital role in making mental health services more accessible, efficient, and coordinated, ultimately supporting children and young people on their journey toward improved mental, emotional, and social wellbeing. Our model of care is trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and family-centred.
You will be part of a supportive, experienced multidisciplinary team and receive direct line management from the CAMHS CCI Special Programs & Partnerships Manager. The role offers regular clinical supervision, ongoing professional development opportunities, and access to a wide range of training and education programs—all designed to support your growth and success in this important role.
About you
This role requires highly developed verbal and written communication, negotiation, and critical thinking skills. You will demonstrate confidence in clinical decision-making, along with proven experience in conducting comprehensive bio-psycho-social-cultural assessments and mental health risk assessments. Strong clinical judgement and the ability to collaborate effectively with key stakeholders are essential. The successful applicant will be skilled in engaging and building rapport with young people and their carers, providing compassionate and effective support to those experiencing emotional distress and vulnerability.
Requirements
- Must hold a qualification in one of the following: Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Social Work, Counsellor (Degree in Bachelor of Health Science Mental health, Djirruwang Program) which provides eligibility or membership of the relevant professional association and (where relevant) general registration through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- For appointment at Clinical Nurse Specialist Grade 2: relevant post-registration qualifications and at least 3 years' experience working in the clinical area of their specified post-graduate qualification, or such other qualifications or equivalent experience deemed appropriate by the service.
