About the role

If you are passionate about conservation of the environment and our native animals, this is an opportunity for you to apply your extensive project management skills to make a difference and play a lead role in the rewilding of Yiraaldiya National Park in Western Sydney.

This role is within the Cumberland Area of the Greater Sydney Branch, managing 22 reserves in Western Sydney. A small team within the Area is dedicated to the establishment of the feral predator free area and works closely with field staff, the project management team, the NPWS Threatened Species Unit and external stakeholders to deliver this critically important project.

The Yiraaldiya National Park feral predator-free area project has constructed the predator proof fence of both stage 1 and 2 and is progressing with pest animal control in stage 2 and following successful eradication, will commence reintroductions of locally extinct native animals. Koalas, Eastern Bettongs and the New Holland Mouse have already been released into stage 1.

As the Senior Project Officer, you will manage and coordinate the development, implementation and evaluation of this diverse and complex project, ensuring completion within required deadlines, quality standards and at or below budgets to support the achievement of Divisional and Departmental strategic and operational objectives. We are looking for highly motivated individuals with the initiative, ability, and desire to work in small, dynamic, and productive team.

About you

As a Senior Project Officer you will develop, deliver and review projects within the team; managing the delivery of environment impact assessments, oversee the day-to-day operations of a complex conservation project. You will supervise assigned staff and contractors and liaise with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure the smooth delivery of the feral predator free area, including monitoring and reporting of project budgets, resource requirements, stakeholder engagement, contract administration, and procurement.

Your passion for your community and environment, coupled with a strong attention to detail and proficiency in project management will be key to your success in this role. You'll be adept in providing high level specialist advice and information to stakeholders on emerging project issues and to support project development and delivery in line with established plans, budgets, timeframes, policy and environmental objectives and other project and priorities.

Essential requirements

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications or demonstrated equivalent, relevant professional experience.
  • Project management skills and experience with an understanding of contemporary best practice in procurement, tendering and contract preparation, in managing project teams, consultants and contractors, and in applying environmental safety and risk management policies and systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing and reviewing strategic plans, policies and programs, and in providing strategic and operational advice and recommendations to senior management.

It is desirable if you have experience in working on rewilding or threatened species projects and/or stakeholder engagement activities to support the successful operation of the feral predator free area.
