The Data Science Group is looking for a solution-focussed data engineer who is excited to infuse their data engineer expertise across our diverse science teams to help deliver impactful science. The role:

As a Data Engineer in our Data Science Group, you'll be at the heart of innovation. We are actively improving our data systems, from acquisition of data in the field in near real-time to data visualisation and analyses, with lots of opportunity to help shape the future of Cawthron's data-driven solutions.

You'll collaborate with researchers, technologists, and industry partners to deliver solutions that power world-class science. From deploying containerised apps in the cloud to developing APIs and ETL pipelines, your work will make a tangible difference – helping to protect ecosystems, drive sustainable aquaculture, and support thriving communities.

What you'll bring:

• A degree in IT, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
• Proven experience delivering end-to-end data solutions – pipelines, APIs, and database architecture (SQL & no-SQL).
• Strong programming skills in Python or R, and SQL, with hands-on experience in CI/CD workflows and containerisation (Docker).
• Experience with cloud platforms, preferably Azure, and managing cloud-based infrastructure.
• Familiarity with authentication and authorisation flows for web applications.
• Experience with front end development, especially JavaScript frameworks will be a bonus.
• Excellent communication and documentation skills, with the ability to explain technical solutions clearly.
• A collaborative, proactive mindset – able to mentor colleagues and work across diverse teams.
• Openness to learning and applying Tikanga Māori principles and Te Reo Māori in your work.
• Strong judgement, discretion, and a commitment to safety and wellbeing in the workplace.
