Sydney, New South Wales, Australia Atlassian Full time $120,000 - $180,000 per year
Overview

Working at Atlassian

Atlassians can choose where they work – whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity. Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, a part of being a distributed-first company.

This is a remote position. To help our teams work together, this role requires you to be located in the Eastern Australian Time Zone.

The role

Jira is looking for an experienced and passionate Design Manager within its Frontier team, to drive expansion for Jira by improving collaboration.

As a people manager you'll report directly to the Senior Design Manager and lead a team of product and content designers focused on improving Jira for all team types. You bring a strong blend of product design expertise, systems thinking, and people leadership, along with strong communication and operational instincts that help teams deliver at scale.

As a design leader and member of the leadership team you'll lead the day-to-day direction of Jira Frontier design, turning strategy into clear priorities, guiding the team's focus, and delivering work that moves teams forward. You'll guide your team in delivering scalable, high-quality design work across a broad range of surfaces, and uphold a high bar for craft and user-centered thinking.

Responsibilities

Partner with Product and Engineering managers to shape the direction of Jira, align priorities, and ensure design is driving toward high-impact outcomes.

Support your team in delivering high-quality design work from early framing through detailed execution, ensuring solutions are user-centered, technically grounded, and scalable.

Guide project planning and prioritization across multiple workstreams. Help the team focus on the most important problems and navigate complexity with clarity.

Provide clear, actionable feedback on design direction, interaction patterns, and system-level thinking and uphold a high bar for craft.

Hire, coach, and grow a diverse team of product designers. Support individual development, career growth, and day-to-day effectiveness.

Communicate the team's work clearly and consistently across audiences. Share progress, context, and outcomes with design leadership, cross-functional peers, and stakeholders across the company.

Help the team identify and elevate new opportunities using research, product data, and user insights. Coach strong problem framing and advocate for investments that matter.

Build strong cross-functional relationships across product and engineering. Develop a deep technical understanding and use that fluency to design effectively, guide the team, and communicate the value of the work to a variety of audiences.

Qualifications

6+ years of experience designing software products, with 3+ years of experience managing and mentoring product designers.

Proven success leading design for complex products at scale.

Demonstrated experience operating in enterprise-grade environments with high availability, security, and performance requirements, at the scale of a multi-product platform serving millions of users.

A strong portfolio showcasing high-quality, system-oriented work across multiple surfaces. You can clearly articulate your team's role, your leadership impact, and how the design advanced business and user goals.

Effective communicator and collaborator. You've built trusted relationships across design, product, engineering, and marketing, and are comfortable engaging with executive stakeholders.

Known for your craft leadership. You support and grow high-quality interaction and visual design, and guide the work toward elegant, durable solutions.

Proven ability to hire and grow design talent. You give thoughtful feedback, coach for impact, and create an environment where designers can grow through challenge, support, and trust. You inspire, not just direct.

Comfortable leading in a distributed environment. You've managed remote teams and know how to create connection, clarity, and momentum.

You're outcomes-focused. You care about setting clear OKRs, measuring progress, and ensuring design drives meaningful impact for the business and our users.

You lead with empathy and resilience. Empathy for our customers, to build products they'll love, and for our coworkers, to build a workplace we'll love. Resilience to take feedback from anywhere, consider it with care, and fold it into your thinking and your leadership.

Preferred experience

Strong preference for experience working with AI-powered product surfaces or features that enable AI and machine learning use cases.

Strong preference for experience with experimentation and A/B testing.

Experience leading the design of 0→1 feature initiatives.
