Milestone IT is partnering with a leading, high-transaction retail organization currently undergoing significant digital transformation across its retail and logistics platforms. We are urgently seeking an experienced and highly technical SQL Database Administrator (DBA) to support, optimize, and secure large-scale SQL Server environments that underpin critical business systems. This is a hands-on role suited to a DBA who thrives in a complex, high-transaction retail environment.

Key Responsibilities

As the SQL DBA, you will be responsible for:

  • Administering, maintaining, and tuning multiple Microsoft SQL Server environments (on-prem and Azure SQL).
  • Performing regular health checks, backups, restores, and disaster-recovery testing.
  • Optimizing database performance, including indexing, query tuning, and resource management.
  • Managing data migrations, upgrades, and patching.
  • Implementing and maintaining database security standards and access controls.
  • Supporting developers with schema design, stored procedures, and query optimisation.
  • Monitoring jobs, replication, and availability groups; responding to performance alerts.
  • Contributing to automation and DevOps initiatives related to data operations.
  • Working collaboratively with infrastructure, development, and application support teams.

Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • 8+ years' experience as a SQL Server DBA in enterprise environments.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL Server , SSIS, SSRS, and replication.
  • Proven experience with performance tuning and query optimisation.
  • Expertise in HA/DR solutions (Always On Availability Groups, clustering, log shipping).
  • Familiarity with Azure SQL, PowerShell, and automation tools.
  • Solid understanding of ITIL processes and change control.
  • Excellent analytical, documentation, and communication skills.

Desirable Skills:

  • Exposure to large-scale retail or ERP environments (e.g., SAP backend).
  • Experience working alongside DevOps and cloud engineering teams.
  • Knowledge of data governance, security, and compliance standards.
