Fixed term full-time position for 18 months.
The Biomedical Engineer will play a key role in developing and translating a novel 3D-printed imaging catheter designed to improve the early detection of high-risk atherosclerotic plaques. This position is part of an interdisciplinary project jointly undertaken by the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS).
Working under general direction, the Biomedical Engineer will contribute to the design, fabrication, and testing of prototype imaging devices aimed at enabling precise and reliable plaque detection. The role involves supporting both preclinical and first-in-human studies, helping to bridge the gap between research innovation and clinical translation.
To be successful you will need:
- Mechanical Engineering Expertise: Demonstrated skills in mechanical design and engineering drawing, with hands-on experience in building mechanical enclosures or prototypes. Proven ability to collaborate with industry partners to refine and optimise designs for practical applications (essential)
- Basic project Management Skills: Ability to document and report project progress, ensuring timely delivery of milestones. Experience in coordinating effectively with industrial partners and multidisciplinary teams to achieve project objectives (essential)
- Entrepreneurial Mindset: Evidence of initiative and a proactive approach to problem-solving, with a demonstrated interest in translating research outcomes into real-world applications.
- Relevant Technical Experience: Prior experience working on animal/human experiments or fibre-optic–related projects, with an understanding of their unique technical and regulatory considerations.
- A degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electronics Engineering.
