Redbank School is a school for specific purposes supporting students years 7 to 12. The school's total enrolment is 84, enrolments spanning across two separate inpatient wards, 2 ILSMH classes, outreach support and support for students post hospital admission.
The Learning and Support Teacher (LaST) at Redbank School plays a critical role in supporting students with complex mental health needs and diverse learning profiles. The successful applicant will work collaboratively with classroom teachers, the school leadership team, and health professionals to design, implement, and review personalised learning and support programs.
The role involves supporting curriculum differentiation, developing functional literacy and numeracy programs, monitoring student progress, and assisting teachers to implement evidence-based strategies that enhance learning engagement and wellbeing. The LaST will contribute to a culture of collaboration, empathy, and inclusion, ensuring that all students are supported to achieve their individual goals in a safe and supportive environment.
Applicants should demonstrate:
- A strong understanding of trauma-informed and recovery-oriented education practices;
- Experience supporting students with complex mental health needs and learning difficulties in secondary settings; and
- The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team to promote positive student outcomes.
Applicants must demonstrate the capacity and flexibility to work across three school locations, including adolescent inpatient wards within hospital settings. The school operates across Westmead and Nepean Hospitals, providing specialised educational programs to students with complex mental health needs. As part of this role, successful applicants will be required to engage effectively in multidisciplinary environments and adapt to the unique demands of inpatient education.
Selection CriteriaApproval to teach students with learning and support needs secondary and/or experience teaching students with learning and support needs secondary in regular classes. Capacity to provide specialist assistance to students in regular classes with additional learning and support needed and their teachers.
In addition to the general selection criteria:
- Describe your experience and expertise in supporting students with complex needs, including those with significant mental health difficulties, in a secondary school, Years 7–12, or specialist setting. Explain how you ensure meaningful access to curriculum and pedagogy to meet diverse learning, social, and emotional needs?
- Outline your experience working collaboratively with school counsellors, psychologists, allied health professionals, parents/carers and external agencies) to develop and implement individual learning and support plans for students with complex needs.
- Describe how you have contributed to building staff capacity to support students with additional learning and wellbeing needs. What professional learning or mentoring/collaborative approaches have you used to promote inclusive and trauma-informed practices across the school?
An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
