The role:

The Product Development Engineer - Mechanical will be responsible for the design, testing, and continuous improvement of Downee's products, with a particular focus on gate automation systems. This position supports new product development and refinement of existing designs through 3D CAD modelling, lab-based testing, mechanical problem-solving, and documentation. The role collaborates with the internal engineering team but reports directly to the National Product Manager.

Downee is a market leader in gate hardware and automation across Australia and New Zealand. This role is essential in ensuring product reliability, engineering accuracy, and overall quality of our manufactured solutions.

Key responsibilities:

·       Develop 3D CAD models and drawings for mechanical components and assemblies using SolidWorks

·       Build, assemble and test product prototypes in the internal lab

·       Conduct functional and durability testing, including IP rating, impact, and operational cycles

·       Update and maintain accurate drawings, BOMs, and engineering documentation

·       Identify and resolve mechanical and design-related issues through hands-on validation

·       Support ongoing maintenance and improvement of existing product lines

·       Assist in preparing technical materials such as datasheets, installation instructions, and user manuals

·       Work with internal and external stakeholders as needed

·      Provide engineering input into product compliance and regulatory testing processes.

Qualifications & Experience:

Essential:

·       Degree in Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering

·       Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in product design and testing

·       Proficient with SolidWorks, engineering tools and Microsoft Office suit

·       Hands-on experience with tools, assembly, and testing environments

·       Strong attention to detail and ability to document technical work clearly

·       Working knowledge of relevant standards and compliance

Desirable:

·       Background in automatic entrance systems, access control, or electromechanical systems

·       Familiarity with physical testing for IP rating, endurance, and mechanical loads

·       Experience working in small to medium manufacturing or R&D teams
