Job Description
Position Objectives
The Family and Carer Peer Worker will bring what they have learned from their lived or living experience as a family member, carer or supporter of people with mental health challenges and/or alcohol and drug challenges. Family and Carer peer workers primarily work with families and carers and walk alongside service users to improve mental health and wellbeing. This is done in alignment with Mallee Family Care and lead organisation Mind's recovery orientated approach to working with families and carers, Peer Work Framework and Intentional Peer Support.
The Family and Carer Peer Worker is expected to champion the voice of lived experience, advocate for human rights and provide an alternative to traditional mental health responses by working relationally and through the practice of mutuality. Additionally, Family and Carer Peer Workers practice in alignment with family-centred principles, relational recovery-oriented approaches, trauma-informed theories, intersectional and anti-racist/anti-oppressive ways of working.
Family and Carer Peer Workers champion co-production practices and actively participate in that services and programs centre the needs and preferences of service users. They work to place the relationship and service user's journey at the centre. Family and Carer Peer Workers work alongside a person to understand their hopes and challenges and identify how they would like to move towards what is possible in their lives through a relational approach.
