Role Overview:

The Design Manager acts as a multi-disciplinary design leader, overseeing technical teams to ensure the delivery of consistent, high-quality, value-for-money engineering solutions. This role is pivotal in managing design processes, driving innovation, and challenging stakeholders to optimise project outcomes. You'll also ensure compliance with technical standards, lead process improvements, and foster collaboration across engineering, project, and client teams.

About the Person:

The ideal candidate will be a qualified engineer with proven experience in design management and project delivery. You'll bring strong leadership presence, strategic thinking, and the ability to influence and challenge stakeholders to achieve optimal results. You are solutions-driven, collaborative, and thrive in environments that demand both technical expertise and people leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage multi-disciplinary design teams to deliver accurate, timely, and cost-effective outputs
  • Ensure compliance with safety and sustainability in design standards
  • Oversee design quality through adherence to technical standards and review processes
  • Collaborate with project and engineering teams to scope, resource, and deliver projects successfully
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement in design processes, systems, and documentation
  • Maintain effective stakeholder relationships and provide clear communication on project progress, risks, and costs
  • Support knowledge sharing, staff development, and a positive team culture

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Degree qualification in Engineering (essential)
  • Experience in design management, design review, and infrastructure standards
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to inspire and motivate teams
  • Strategic planning and problem-solving skills with a focus on innovation
  • Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills
  • Strong technical writing and report preparation skills
  • Project management qualifications or equivalent experience (desirable)
  • Experience auditing technical reports and designs (desirable)
