Boorloo Bidee Mia (BBM) provides a low-threshold and change accommodation option for people who have been sleeping rough. It provides 66 rooms, a range of common areas, and ongoing, responsive support available to all residents for the duration of their stay. A key focus of the service is to support Aboriginal people experiencing homelessness.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As part of the BBM Community Activities Team, the BBM Daily Living Skills Worker report to the BBM Community Activities Coordinator.
The BBM Community Activities Team play a crucial role in activating the people and the environment at BBM. This activation promotes participation in BBM community activities and tasks, providing people with opportunities for people to 'thrive, not just survive'. Community development is a key feature of the BBM model, and we want to build an environment where everyone shares responsibility for its success, much like a neighbourhood.
The BBM Daily Living Skills Worker will walk alongside residents and staff to co-create (generate ideas) co-design (figure out how it might work), and co-produce (deliver together), community activities, including: assistance with daily living skills, social and emotional wellbeing from a nutritional perspective, physical exercise and sports, gardening, support groups and many others.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting a community development culture focussed on healing, safety, growth, connection and empowerment.
- Identifying individual and group strengths of residents and staff to benefit the BBM community.
- Promoting conversations with residents and staff about continuous improvement of the service.
- Providing culturally appropriate holistic support to BBM residents, i.e., lending a hand when needed, and supporting residents to 'put their best foot forward' in tough times.
- Support the BBM residents to feel welcome, supported, and to participate in community activities.
- Support visiting Wungening and external services to engage with residents.
- Supporting BBM residents to maintain their room and common areas.
- Work collaboratively and proactively the BBM Team to support residents to achieve their goals, promote participation in community activities, and prevent challenges to their stay at BBM.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA (address this in your cover letter)
- The ability to work in a manner consistent with Wungening Values.
- Knowledge of Aboriginal culture, protocols, boundaries, and experience working within the Aboriginal community.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a range of people from culturally and linguistically (CALD) diverse backgrounds, in particular Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Qualifications in a relevant discipline eg. Welfare, Community Services, Social Work or Counselling or relevant work experience.
- Motivation and enthusiasm to support people, staff and residents, to participate in community activities.
- Commitment to support the agency of the people we work with, promoting empowerment and self-determination.
- Ability to work with client management systems, including reporting and case note experience.
- A great attitude and curiosity to learn new ways of working.
- Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of the team.
- Sound computer skills, experience working with MS Office programs and data management systems
- Willingness to undertake personal and professional development.
