The Role - Fixed term 18 month contract (with possibility for extension)

Reporting to the Chief People & Safety Officer, the purpose of this role is to lead AMS Group's Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) strategy, ensuring a physically and mentally safe workplace that supports employee wellbeing, complies with legal obligations, and fosters a proactive safety culture. This role is pivotal in embedding psychosocial safety, driving continuous improvement, and enabling operational excellence through effective risk management and wellbeing initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

The Head of HSW performs a wide range of duties that may include, but are not limited to:

Strategic Leadership

  • Set the HSW strategic direction in consultation with ELT team and board.
  • Develop and execute the AMS Group HSW strategy in alignment with organisational values and business plans.
  • Regularly review the strategic plan and adjust improvement activities as required to effectively manage risk and maintain legal compliance.
  • Ensure frameworks, policies, systems and tools are in place to comply with regulatory and industrial requirements.
  • Oversee an effective monitoring and review of organisational safety performance, contractor management and risk management.
  • Lead the implementation of psychosocial safety frameworks and training programs across all business units.
  • Champion a culture of safety leadership and wellbeing through education, engagement, and accountability.

Safety Leadership & Culture

  • Ensure leaders at AMS understand the safety leadership attributes needed to maintain a strong safety culture
  • Provide coaching and support to leader where required to maintain safety leadership standards within AMS.
  • Monitor the safety, culture and take action to address any areas that may require additional safety leadership focus

Policy & Compliance

  • Own and maintain the AMS Health and Safety Policy, ensuring alignment with OHS legislation and AMS standards.
  • Oversee the Health and Safety Management System and annual safety action plans.
  • Ensure robust consultation and communication processes for safety-related changes.

Operational Excellence

  • Monitor and report on safety performance metrics, including incident rates, training completion, and EAP utilisation.
  • Lead the development and review of the Critical Risk Register, including psychosocial risks.
  • Drive continuous improvement through data analysis, stakeholder feedback, and innovation.

Wellbeing & Engagement

  • Collaborate with the Organisational Development team to deliver wellbeing programs and initiatives that support employee experience.
  • Promote mental health awareness and reduce stigma through targeted campaigns and training.
  • Ensure integration of wellbeing into leadership development and onboarding programs.

Leadership

  • Lead and participate in key safety forums
  • Lead and develop the HSW team, including the National Safety Manager and Advisors.
  • Foster cross-functional collaboration with People Business Partners and operational leaders.
