Mating Shed Attendant

Merivale Farms is a leading pig production business dedicated to high-quality animal care, sustainable farming practices, and efficient operations. Our Allora site operates with strict biosecurity standards and a focus on teamwork, safety, and continuous improvement.


Position Overview

The Mating Shed Attendant will be responsible for assisting with all activities in the mating shed to support the reproductive performance of the herd. This includes heat detection, sow and boar handling, assisting with artificial insemination, and maintaining strict hygiene and biosecurity practices.

You will work closely with the breeding team and farm management to ensure efficient, safe, and welfare-focused operations in the shed, contributing directly to herd fertility and overall farm productivity.


Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with sow and boar handling in the mating shed.
  • Carry out heat detection and support artificial insemination procedures.
  • Move animals safely and humanely during breeding activities.
  • Monitor animal health and behaviour, reporting concerns promptly.
  • Keep accurate and timely breeding and mating records.
  • Maintain high standards of hygiene, cleanliness, and biosecurity within the shed.
  • Clean and maintain mating shed facilities, pens, and equipment.
  • Work collaboratively with farm staff to meet breeding targets.
  • Assist with other piggery duties as required.

Requirements
  • Previous livestock handling experience needed.
  • Ability to follow instructions and maintain accurate records.
  • Physically fit and comfortable working in a hands-on, fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to animal welfare, hygiene, and safety.
  • Willingness to comply with strict biosecurity rules.
  • Positive attitude, teamwork focus, and reliability.

Biosecurity & Workplace Rules
  • No pigs, poultry, or birds to be kept at home unless approved by management.
  • Minimum 3-day stand-down required after visiting another piggery before entering Merivale Farms site.
  • Personal clothing must not be worn — farm-supplied clothing provided.
  • No mobile phones permitted in sheds.

Days & Hours
  • Monday to Friday, 7:30am – 4:00pm.
  • Friday early finish: 2:00pm.
  • Breaks: Morning tea 15 mins, lunch 30 mins.
  • Weekend work: Every 3rd weekend — 3 hours on Saturday and Sunday for essential livestock care.
