OUR TEAM
Our Above Water Systems team provides engineering & maintenance services to Royal Australian Navy vessels and commercial ships. We're proud to bolster Australia's sovereign capability through operational support to our defence partners. With ongoing training programs and a team of over 500, our people have room to grow and develop an impactful career with us. Located centrally in Woolloomooloo's Garden Island, on Gadigal land.

Being a Fitter & Machinist Apprentice at Thales, you'll have a job that matters to us, to you and to everyone.
Over our 4 year program you will have the chance to learn the technicalities of your trade at school and then apply this to a supportive environment whilst you learn on the job. We can provide the challenges and opportunities, all you need to do is bring a willingness to learn

Beginning in the workshop you will eventually progress to working on large maritime vessels. As a Fitter & Machinist you can expect to:

  • Removing, installing & setting to work of various mechanical items, including diagnosis of faults
  • Overhauling – strip, survey, repair and test various mechanical items such as pumps and valves
  • Various plant operations, as well as shaft alignments
  • Performing calculations and measurements with various instruments

  • Have completed year 10 studies at a minimum
  • Have great communication skills and enjoy interacting with different groups of people
  • Be able to complete maths problems and put this to use in the workplace

A Defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants must be Australian citizens and eligible to obtain and maintain an appropriate clearance.
