The opportunity

The Principal Policy Officer's primary purpose is to assist with the legislative program of the SRO and contribute to the development of policy. The role may also include providing leadership, expertise and advice on revenue law and administration matters impacting the SRO, including matters relating to subordinate legislation, complaints, privacy, delegations and information requests.

Reporting to the Senior Policy Specialist, among other things, you will be responsible for:

  • Contributing to the formulation of revenue policy proposals and programs.
  • Providing high level advice on the development of new legislation or legislative amendments to stakeholders, including on Government, parliamentary and legislative processes.
  • Assisting with the coordination and preparation of responses to Ministerial Correspondence.
  • Providing parliamentary and ministerial support, including preparation of responses to Questions on Notice, Adjournment Debates, Questions without Notice, Constituency Questions and Possible Parliamentary Questions.
  • Assist in mentoring junior staff.

Who we are looking for

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • 1. Policy skills:
    Demonstrated experience in the development of policy proposals and programs and the provision of high-quality policy advice, preferably in a taxation environment.
  • 2. Legislative development:
    Demonstrated experience in developing legislation, preferably in a taxation environment, and an understanding of Government, parliamentary and legislative processes.
  • 3. Legislative interpretation and application
    : Demonstrated experience in the interpretation and application of legislation, preferably in a taxation environment, and the ability to understand and apply legislation impacting the administration of taxation.
  • 4. Communication Skills:
    Demonstrated high-level communication (written, interpersonal and verbal), analytical, and problem-solving skills, including sound judgement and the demonstrated ability to negotiate and build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • 5. Organisational skills:
    Demonstrated high-level conceptual, analytical, problem-solving and organisational skills to ensure work is completed to business and legislative requirements, and ability to work within a small team environment.
