What you'll do

In this role you will perform routine operational laboratory tasks under supervision. This includes, handling and processing of laboratory specimens received from human, animal, food, water, and environmental sources; produce media and reagents for the Public Health Microbiology (PHM) laboratory; collect used glassware and waste from PEHRL laboratories, sterilise waste and contaminated glassware, clean and return according to each laboratory's guidelines as part of a rotational team of clinical assistants. You will report to the Laboratory Operations Manager.

About you

We are searching for someone who:

  • Holds at least a Certificate IV in laboratory techniques or equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution.

  • Possess or be able to acquire expert knowledge and skills in the production of laboratory media.

  • Ability to perform and train Clinical Assistant (CA) staff in all tasks within a Media Preparation and Glassware/Sterilisation area and become the backup for the senior technician for Glassware/Media Preparation.

  • Possess or be able to acquire knowledge and training skills in the receipt, registration and processing of a range of samples received by the laboratories as well as familiarity with Microsoft programs such as Word & Excel, and laboratory information management systems e.g. AUSLAB.

  • Ability to perform and train CA staff in laboratory tasks including, but not limited to, use and maintenance of laboratory equipment, precision and accuracy checks on equipment, media and reagent preparation, assisting in the production and performance of a range of diagnostic tests, and the keeping and maintenance of concise and accurate records.

  • Ability to perform non-clinical tasks such as procurement, stock control and data entry to support the laboratory's service delivery.
