Job Title: Legal Counsel (Construction Industry)

Job Overview: We are seeking a qualified lawyer and NSW registered solicitor with 2-3 years of postgraduate experience, specializing in commercial law, to join our team as legal counsel. This role is pivotal in managing contractual agreements related to construction projects, ensuring legal compliance, debt recovery, and overseeing HR functions. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of contract and commercial law, litigation experience preferred, coupled with strong negotiation, organisational, and communication skills. The candidate must be able to assess and balance legal issues/risk with commercial considerations.

· Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Contract & Legal:

· Draft, review, and negotiate construction-related contracts, including scope of works, subcontractor agreements, and client contracts.

· Assist in updating and maintaining existing contracts for compliance and efficiency.

· Clearly explain contract terms, conditions, and legal implications to project teams and management.

· Ensure all employees and project managers understand contractual obligations and legal requirements.

· Conduct risk assessments related to contractual provisions and legislative changes affecting the construction sector.

· Ensure timely fulfillment of contractual deadlines and conditions.

· Maintain organized records of all contracts, both physical and digital.

· Finalize project contract legal terms and scope of works with sales and project management teams.

· Distribute contractual documents and scope of works promptly, ensuring full visibility for project teams.

· Transmit signed contracts to clients and stakeholders, and clarify contract details with project managers.

· Manage the registration of security interests on assets under PPSA regulations.

· Support project managers in managing variations, claims, disputes and contractual amendments.

· Provide contract-related training for internal teams.

Human Resources & Compliance:

· Oversee personnel records, HR documentation, and internal databases.

· Assist with recruitment, onboarding, and new hire documentation.

· Respond to employee inquiries related to HR policies and procedures.

· Maintain and monitor the qualifications register, tracking expiry dates and compliance with certifications.

· Support HR processes such as probation reviews and performance management.

· Assist in the implementation of HR policies, training, and disciplinary procedures.

· Manage and advise on legal issues related to construction projects and company operations.

· Act as the primary point of contact for all corporate legal matters, including commercial contracts.

· Ensure compliance with all relevant state, federal, and local legislation.

· Oversee WHSE (Workplace Health, Safety, and Environment) requirements across construction sites.

Qualifications & Skills:

· Qualified Lawyer with 2-3 years postgraduate experience, preferably in commercial or construction law and currently registered as a practising solicitor in NSW.

· Excellent negotiation, communication, and people skills a must.

· Highly organized with strong attention to detail.

· Ability to work collaboratively across multiple departments and with external legal counsel.
