Perth, Western Australia Public Transport Authority Full time $60,000 - $90,000 per year

About the Role

Join the Public Transport Authority (PTA) in a hands-on role supporting the safe and reliable operation of railway Overhead Line Equipment (OLE). As an OLE Assistant, you'll work alongside experienced Linespersons to carry out essential maintenance and construction of new overhead line assets tasks such as cleaning insulators, earthing and bonding, installation of cantilevers, insulation, registration, conducting line patrols, and operating high-voltage equipment. You'll also be responsible for the care and use of tools, machinery, and plant equipment within your training level, ensuring all work sites are left clean and safe. Once trained, you'll operate Elevated Work Platforms (EWP) and contribute to the upkeep of critical infrastructure that powers Perth's rail network.

This role demands a strong commitment to safety and compliance within an electrified railway environment. You'll follow established procedures, maintain required accreditations and licences, and stay current with competency standards. Additional responsibilities include using technical diagrams and manuals, operating light, and heavy ridged vehicles and communication equipment, and performing tasks under supervision that align with your skills and training. If you're ready to build a career in rail operations and contribute to the smooth running of public transport in Western Australia, this is your opportunity to get started.

About You

To succeed in this trainee role, you'll bring:

  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills, along with a strong interest in hands-on work. You're comfortable using hand and power tools, and keen to learn how to operate machinery and equipment safely.
  • Good communication skills – both written and verbal – and a positive attitude toward working with others in a team environment.
  • A practical approach to problem-solving, with the ability to follow instructions and think on your feet when faced with new tasks.
  • A strong commitment to safety, a willingness to learn, and the initiative to take responsibility and work reliably in a busy, fast-paced setting.

  • A current Western Australian 'C' Class Driver's Licence (or equivalent) for at least one year, with ongoing licence validity required throughout employment.

For appointments at level 2, candidates must show proven competency in all lower-level Linesperson duties or possess equivalent skills and experience in overhead maintenance. This includes current accreditation in Working at Heights and possession of a valid Construction Industry White Card.
