About the Census:

The Census of Population and Housing (the Census) is the most comprehensive snapshot of Australia and tells the story of how we are changing. It helps us understand what we need now, and into the future.

The Census is run every five years. It's one of the largest and most important collections to count the number of people and houses in Australia. The Census asks questions about your age, country of birth, cultural background, living situation, work and education. It's used to estimate Australia's population, distribute government funds, and plan services for individuals, families and communities.

About this role:

As a Remote Census Engagement Manager, you will play a key role in maximising participation in the Census. Your role is important in connecting the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to stakeholders and members of the community in regional and remote areas. You will assist Census operational teams in achieving outcomes through targeted engagement activities.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to, creating engagement plans, updating stakeholder management systems with all engagement activities, undertaking promotional activities and providing support and assistance to operational teams undertaking activities in your area.

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples are strongly encouraged to apply. Cultural knowledge and lived experience are highly valued and essential to shaping positive outcomes for communities.

As a Remote Census Engagement Manager, you will:

  • Plan, coordinate and deliver Census engagement activities for your assigned region. This could include towns and/or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Maintain a record of your engagement activities via our ABS Stakeholder Management System.
  • Develop, update and review engagement plans for your area of responsibility.
  • Promote participation in the Census through community visits, promotional activities and presentations.
  • Connect with the community, establish networks and maintain those relationships.
  • Work collaboratively with other Census and ABS staff in your area, providing important cultural considerations and/or area-level intelligence.
  • Gather support for the Census from local government and community organisations, as well as key service providers.
  • Provide in-field assistance when required for Census operational activities.
  • Maintain a safe working environment, including when working from home or travelling in remote areas.
  • Complete administration forms (such as timesheets) and other duties as directed.
  • Store Census promotional materials securely.
  • Provide regular updates to the Remote Operations Management team.

Key qualities and experience:

  • Demonstrated experience or knowledge in working with or advocating for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Ability to connect and engage with a range of service providers, communicate effectively, and develop strong working relationships.
  • Communicating sensitively and effectively to present information to both small and large groups or communities.
  • Capability to work independently, prioritise tasks with limited guidance, and make decisions independently.
  • Sound local area knowledge and the ability to read and navigate maps.
  • Applicants who live in, have worked in, or have connections to communities in the nominated area will be highly regarded.
