RoleLearning Specialists will be highly skilled classroom practitioners who continue to spend the majority of their time in the classroom delivering high-quality teaching and learning and have a range of responsibilities related to their expertise, including teaching demonstration lessons, observing and providing feedback to other teachers and facilitating school-based professional learning. Learning Specialists are expected to have deep knowledge and expertise in high quality teaching and learning in delivering improved achievement, engagement and wellbeing for students. The role of the Learning Specialist will be to model excellence in teaching and learning through demonstration lessons and, mentoring and coaching teachers in improving the skill, knowledge and effectiveness of the teaching workforce.
The Learning Specialist role is aimed at building excellence in teaching and learning within the Teaching Service.
ResponsibilitiesRole Description:
The Teaching and Learning Leading Specialist plays a key role in supporting and leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of teaching and learning programs at Somerville Secondary College. This role works collaboratively with staff, curriculum leaders, and the Principal Team to ensure high-quality pedagogical practices and improved student learning outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Leadership in Teaching and Learning
- Lead the whole-college approach to enhancing pedagogy and improving student outcomes.
- Provide leadership and direction in curriculum development, assessment, and reporting across the college.
- Supervise the implementation of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to support improved teacher practice.
- Mentor and support Learning Specialists in literacy and numeracy in collaboration with the Assistant Principal (Teaching and Learning).
- Promote and foster a collaborative, collegial approach to curriculum and instructional improvement.
2. Curriculum Development and Implementation
- Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum programs aligned with the Victorian Curriculum and VTLM 2.0.
- Support key learning areas and teaching staff in curriculum innovation and improvement.
- Work with Learning Specialists and staff in curriculum planning, including the coordination of whole-college curriculum days.
- Ensure curriculum planning reflects the goals and priorities outlined in the College¿s Strategic Plan.
- Stay informed of Department of Education and Training (DET) curriculum initiatives and ensure their dissemination within the college.
- Evaluate and develop strategies to ensure the long-term viability of the Junior College curriculum.
3. Assessment and Reporting
- Manage the college's computerised assessment and reporting system for Years 7¿12.
- Oversee the production of interim and semester reports.
- Ensure teacher reporting systems are regularly updated and comply with DET standards.
- Consult with subject coordinators on assessment items and report formatting.
4. Professional Learning and Development
- Lead the organisation of professional learning days and other staff development opportunities.
- Communicate professional development opportunities and align them with school, PLC, and individual staff goals.
- Allocate professional development funds equitably, ensuring alignment with strategic and professional learning priorities.
- Work with the Principal Class Team to formalise the college¿s professional learning policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with the Daily Organiser to manage external professional development without disrupting daily operations.
- Provide staff with relevant documentation, including PLC goal sheets and the Professional Learning Team handbook.
- Maintain the professional learning budget.
5. Communication and Community Engagement
- Communicate curriculum initiatives and updates to staff, students, parents, and external stakeholders.
- Contribute to college publications such as the newsletter and magazine by submitting articles, photographs, and relevant information.
6. Team Collaboration and School Improvement
- Participate in the following college teams:
- Teaching and Learning Team
- Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)
- School Development Team (SDT)
- Leadership Team
- Work collaboratively with KLA leaders, Principal Class Team, and curriculum teams to determine staff needs and support best practices in teaching and learning.
- Support new staff members with curriculum orientation and guidance.
- Assist in implementing the goals and priorities outlined in the College¿s Strategic Plan.
Other duties as assigned by the principal.

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.
Location ProfileSomerville Secondary College is situated in the heart of the Mornington Peninsula in the township of Somerville, 55 km from Melbourne¿s central business district.
