EOL Tutors form part of our Learning Assistant team, working cooperatively with Teachers, to seek to maximise the learning outcomes for students.

Working in the International department at Saint Stephen's College which is responsible for the development of global perspectives P-12. Offering high-quality, enriching opportunities across language courses, mainstream curriculum, short stay programs and study tour immersions, students may be from various countries, cultures and religions.

Specifically, EOL Tutor (Senior English) will develop, implement and manage the framework for teaching the QCAA suite of senior English courses for learners where English is an additional language, by working with discretion and judgement alongside the Senior College English teaching team and from time to time, under the direction of the Head of Department English.

Drawing on expert knowledge of classroom procedures, lesson planning and curriculum content, this role supports effective learning delivery. As a role that requires well developed communication skills, the work may require initiative in the application of a broad range of professional practices and the capability to provide professional advice to multiple stakeholders including students, parents and colleagues.

This position is responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Using judgement and discretion to be able to work both cooperatively with teachers, in liaison with other internal stakeholders and self-directed from time to time, to support teaching and learning at the College and to enable the best outcome for student learning.
  • Providing the instruction to students, in a differentiated manner to cater for all English abilities. This includes modifying content, proofing and providing feedback on tasks and providing supplementary materials, while acknowledging the cultural differences of each student.
  • Applying discretion and judgement to the planning and implementing of engaging tutorial sessions that break down challenging concepts to simple concepts.
  • Working from the teachers' programs and plans to develop frameworks for providing instruction to students in individual and/or small group settings by:

o preparing, collecting or developing teaching resources

o setting up activities, equipment, classroom/department displays

o participating in teaching activities under the direction of the teacher

o assisting with monitoring programs for students

o withdrawing students to work on tasks provided by the classroom teacher, pre-teach concepts or revisit concepts students haven't consolidated

o providing administrative support with setting up and managing documentation, photocopying, and laminating

o using a variety of assistive technology to enhance student learning

o assisting with the pastoral care of the students

o supporting an online learning environment by assisting with updating and managing the Learning Management System and sourcing relevant and useful teaching and learning resources

  • Sensitively monitoring and assessing students, and in consultation with teachers, Head of Department and the Executive Director of International Education, make adjustments to assessments, criteria and reports, as appropriate.
  • Participating in reflective learning opportunities such as coaching, performance conversations and annual individualised planning discussions.
  • Managing data, lists and reports across Microsoft Office and TASS software.
  • Using judgement and insight, advise the English faculty on adjustments required, across assessments and reporting frameworks, in general and preparing assessment scaffolds and model/sample responses for the QCAA suite of senior English courses, to support the delivery of the course, managed by an academic staff member.
  • Monitoring student progress and being supportive of the Student Code of Conduct, with guidance from the Executive Director of International Education or as sub delegated by the Executive Director of International Education.

What do I need for the role?

  • TESOL, ELICOS, EOL or similar qualification.
  • Experience working closely with an English faculty, including understanding of QCAA suite of senior English courses and ability to assess against the NLLIA ESL Bandscales as well as an understanding of other English proficiency scoring systems (IELTS, TOEF, CEFR etc)
  • Demonstrated ability to work with online learning environments / learning management systems / school databases to develop, deliver and monitor learning outcomes.
  • An ability to develop positive, empathetic, collaborative relationships with colleagues and students
  • A proactive and professional approach that demonstrates initiative, flexibility and a high level of motivation.

Mandatory Clearances/Certifications

  • Blue Card, in accordance with 'No Card, No link, No Start', as per the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000
