The National Deuteration Facility (NDF) at ANSTO produces deuterated molecules via chemical and biological methods, with molecules requested and provided to both internal and external users through a proposal-based program. The Deuteration Facility Chemist role will contribute to the operations of the NDF by producing molecules labelled with deuterium. The primary purpose of this position is to undertake synthesis, purification and characterisation of deuterated molecules where the synthesis will include traditional organic synthesis and hydrogen/deuterium exhange using hydrothermal processes. The role also supports laboratory operations through day-to-day maintenance and running of the NDF labs. This opportunity will allow you to develop and gain unique skills in deuteration science working within a world-leading deuteration facility and team.  

In this role, you will contribute to the operations of the NDF through production of deuterated molecules and undertaking laboratory support tasks, contributing to great science outcomes through the NDF user program. You will have experience in organic chemistry and working in a research laboratory setting, including understanding of and experience working with quality and safety systems and requirements.

• Contribute to laboratory operation for production and purification of deuterated chemicals to produce deuterated precursors followed by modified traditional synthesis routes.
• Contribute to the characterisation of the deuterated products
• Undertake hydrogen/deuterium exchange reactions and synthesis of molecules from deuterated precursors using established protocols. 
• Chromatographic purification of deuterated molecules using established protocols
• Day-to day responsibility for laboratory operations support tasks contributing to the running of the NDF laboratories
