Primary objective

Under the Leadership of the Specialist Keeper – Flight Deck – assist with the training and conditioning of animals within the

Flight Deck section, (primarily raptors, but also other presentation species), provide daily husbandry, welfare, and

enrichment, and deliver engaging free-flight presentations to achieve environmental awareness, education and visitor

appreciation.

Context statement

The Flight Deck Section is one of the primary attractions of the Territory Wildlife Park – delivering daily world class free-

flight bird presentations. Staff are required to deliver formal and informal presentations and understand animal behaviour,

animal training principals and be capable of using operant conditioning techniques to achieve reliable and safe free flight

outcomes.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Contribute to the day-to-day section requirements of the Flight Deck section including animal care, training, enrichment,

behavioural conditioning, and husbandry of birds and other species for free-flight presentations and encounters.

  1. Contribute to section maintenance and general landscaping.
  2. Engage with park visitors through "hands on" wildlife experiences and daily free flight presentations.
  3. Work within a small dynamic team, support productive working relationships, apply initiative and practical judgement.
  4. Sound written and oral communication skills, with the ability to prepare accurate daily section reports and spreadsheets.
  5. Operate within a strong safety culture, following defined Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) policies and procedures.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Experience and an understanding of raptors and other birds, , with an ability to apply the principles of animal behavioural

training, shaping and animal husbandry standards.

2. Sound understanding of the ZAA requirements of animal welfare and the principles of captive raptor husbandry.

3. Demonstrated ability to engage park visitors through "hands on" wildlife experiences and daily presentations.

4. Demonstrated ability to follow instructions, work effectively within a small dynamic team, support productive working

relationships, apply initiative and practical judgement.

5. Sound written and oral communication skills with the ability to use spreadsheets and complete daily reports.

  1. An ability to interact and work effectively with visitors, volunteers and students.
  2. Possess a current 'C' class driver's licence and Working with Children Clearance Notice (Ochre Card) or ability to obtain.

Desirable

1. Possess a certificate in captive animal management from a recognised institution with prior industry experience.

2. Possess or have the ability to obtain a Senior First Aid Certificate.
