Lead Mechanical Engineer – HVAC

The Lead Mechanical Engineer is responsible for leading the technical delivery of mechanical (HVAC) design and construction across multiple projects. This includes oversight of engineering documentation, coordination with internal teams and external consultants, compliance management with NCC and AS/NZS standards, and mentorship of junior engineers. The role ensures that all mechanical designs are technically robust, efficient, and delivered in line with project budgets and timelines. While leadership and oversight are key components of the role, the Lead Engineer is also expected to personally carry out detailed engineering work as required to support project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Technical Delivery
- Lead the mechanical design process from concept to commissioning
- Personally complete engineering design work including calculations, layouts, equipment selections, and technical documentation
- Review and approve calculations, schematics, layouts, and schedules completed by other engineers
- Ensure compliance with relevant building codes, NCC, AS1668, and project-specific requirements
- Oversee coordination of services with other disciplines including electrical, structural, architectural, and hydraulics
Project Oversight & Task Management
- Complete the project trackers and design checklist documents as part of standard engineering workflow
- Break down design scopes into actionable engineering tasks
- Assign and monitor progress of tasks across the engineering team
- Track and report on engineering hours to ensure they remain within project budgets
- Provide technical support during construction, including RFI responses and site issue resolution
Team Leadership & Mentorship
- Mentor and support the development of junior engineers
- Lead weekly engineering programming meetings and coordinate task planning
- Perform QA/QC checks on design deliverables prior to issue
Stakeholder Coordination
- Engage with clients, consultants, builders, and subcontractors to resolve design challenges
- Represent the company in design coordination meetings, technical reviews, and commissioning activities
- Contribute to value engineering sessions and technical decision-making
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Accuracy and completeness of mechanical documentation
- Timely completion of design packages against milestones
- Design hours completed within allocated budgets
- Minimal rework due to design or coordination errors
- Positive feedback from internal and external stakeholders
- Development and retention of engineering staff
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (required)
- RPEQ registration (or working towards)
- Minimum 6 years of HVAC design experience in building services or construction
- Proficiency in relevant design tools (CAMEL, AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, or similar)
- Sound understanding of HVAC systems across multi-residential, commercial, and industrial sectors
- Strong leadership, coordination, and communication skills
