The purpose of the position is the provision of safe and effective care to patients in the medical wards at Auburn Hospital. This includes general medicine, cardiology, temporary stay unit and the Close Observation Unit including neonates and paediatrics.
Medical Officers will work under an appropriate level of supervision according to their level of competence to evaluate, diagnose, treat and provide consultation to patients of all ages presenting in any condition. Usual separate paediatric cover is from 0800-1630 Monday to Friday.
**Where you'll be working**
Auburn Hospital is a 150 bed acute care health facility in the western Sydney suburb of Auburn, which has one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) population groups in Australia with 78% of the population from a Non-English speaking background. The Facility is on the eastern border of Western Sydney Local Health District,and networked with Westmead Hospital as the large tertiary referral facility.
The Facility has an Emergency Department and Short Stay Unit; Adult General Medicine and Surgical Wards; High Dependency / Close Observation Unit; Maternity and newborn care unit; Paediatric short-stay unit; Temporary stay unit (non-acute care) Palliative Care Unit and satellite renal dialysis.
- The Hospital provides over:
- Over 30,000 attendances to a 24/7 mixed adult and children Emergency Department
- 10,000 surgical procedures per annum in General Surgery, Plastic and Hands, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, ENT, Orthopaedics and Endoscopy.
- 1,600 deliveries per annum primarily for lower risk pregnancies
The Hospital has all diagnostic services on site including Plain radiology, CT and Ultrasound
**What you'll be doing**
- Be capable of providing safe and timely management of admitted medical patients at Auburn Hospital. This includes the supervision of junior medical staff to ensure that the assessment, investigation, diagnosis and management of patients are conducted adequately and safely.
- Proficiently interpret patient history, physical examination, pathology, ECG and radiological investigations to diagnose both simple and complex patients.
- Facilitate urgent assessment and management of critically ill patients, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and ALS procedures including endotracheal intubation and insertion of central lines, arterial lines and intercostal catheters at a level consistent with previous experience and training.
- Ensure accurate documentation in relation to patient care, whilst maintaining confidentiality and privacy, to ensure timely and efficient communication, and that patient records are effective and accurate for current and future use.
- Communicate patient-relevant information in a timely and clear manner to patients and their families/carers and all staff involved in the patient's care, to facilitate shared decision-making and timely information transfer
- Teach and supervise other more junior clinical staff, to enable them to develop the competence and knowledge required for responsible practice, promote team building and a supportive environment, enhance their performance, monitor their welfare, and contribute to development as a supervisor.
- Participate in quality assurance activities to ensure that appropriate standards are maintained, gaps in safety and quality standards are identified, and to contribute to the continual improvement of the department and the service provided by the hospital.
- Create a personal training or development plan, participate in available educational experiences, and actively seek to learn and obtain feedback in order to develop and understand your own skills, knowledge and capability; and therefore, to exercise judgement and know when to seek assistance.
- Participation in a 24/7 roster including being on call as credentialled for the requirements of the position.

**Selection Criteria**:
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- At least three full time postgraduate years’ experience with demonstrated recent clinical and procedural experience in and more than 12 months experience in the Australian healthcare system in critical care specialty areas such as ED, ICU and Anesthetics
