The Role
Broadsheet Media is looking for a Sydney editor to run Broadsheet’s Sydney coverage.
The editor will be responsible for ensuring smooth day-to-day running of the Sydney site, and for delivering on Broadsheet’s promise to be an unparalleled resource on Sydney culture and city life through editorial that’s insightful, sharp, entertaining and accurate.
You will report to Broadsheet’s national editor and oversee production on content related to food and drink, art and design, fashion, entertainment, active and travel in NSW. This is a hands-on role, involving the ideation, planning, commissioning, editing, writing and publication of content, as well as the creation of two weekly EDMs and occasionally social media posts.
We are looking for someone with experience in similar editing roles, ideally working in a fast-paced, high-output digital newsroom environment. But it may also be an ideal role progression for an experienced journalist or writer who has worked in digital news and is keen to progress into an editing role.
Experience managing freelance writers and photographers will be a plus as you will manage contributors, including writers (and sometimes photographers), and provide ongoing guidance to progress their research, pitching, writing and reporting skills.
We are looking for someone with a passion for, and nuanced understanding of, the cultural scene in Sydney. A solid network of contacts across food, arts, culture and media is a plus. Knowledge of Broadsheet will be an advantage, as will experience with SEO and a familiarity with the ways in which a publication can be repackaged socially with speed, clarity, and wit.
Broadsheet editorial is a fast-paced news environment - the Sydney editor must be highly organised, flexible and reliable, and manage high-pressure situations in a calm and professional manner. We are looking for someone who is agile and efficient, self-motivated and has a “yes” mentality. The editor must consistently meets tight deadlines while striving for excellence. This is a key role within Broadsheet and an opportunity to have a significant impact at an award-winning digital publisher.

What We’re Looking For:
- At least three years’ experience in publishing, media or news, with a focus on digital
- Experience commissioning and editing, and managing freelance contributors
- Experience building and sending EDMs
- Excellent editing and proofreading skills, including being a rigorous fact-checker
- Excellent understanding of the rules of grammar, spelling and punctuation
- Excellent attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- A solid understanding of Broadsheet’s style and tone
- Highly organised (good at prioritising, time management, multi-tasking, planning)
- Ability to meet tight deadlines and work calmly and efficiently under pressure
- Flexibility in a constantly changing news environment, including working flexible hours to meet deadlines
- A passion for Sydney culture and city life
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Word
- Strong understanding of online publishing tools and social media
