The Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL) is a leading Australian infectious diseases reference laboratory located in Melbourne, Victoria. VIDRL is now part of the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (the Doherty). The Doherty is a joint venture between Melbourne Health and the University of Melbourne. VIDRL provides the Victorian Department of Health with virology and Mycobacteria public health reference laboratory services, including surveillance, outbreak investigations, reference testing and research. VIDRL also performs diagnostic testing, mainly in virology, for Victorian hospitals.
This Medical Scientist position sits within the High Containment Facility (HCF) at the Doherty Institute. The HCF provides a core scientific facility supporting research, diagnostic and public health activities for both VIDRL and the University of Melbourne. The HCF includes the National High Security Quarantine facility (PC4 - NHSQL) which managed by VIDRL as well as the VIDRL PC3 laboratories. The compliance overlay for these facilities is extensive and includes the Australian Standards (AS), Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR), Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) and the Department of Health (DoH), Security Sensitive Biological Agents (SSBA) as well as the World Health Organisation (WHO) standards.
**Your new role:
- Coordinate Biorisk monitoring, compliance and activities of VIDRL’s HCF and PC2 laboratories.
- Develop, implement and maintain a Biorisk program to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
- Show leadership and teamwork skills.
- Manage workgroups and demonstrate initiative as well as have the ability to work in a self-directed manner.
**About you**:
- You have a Bachelor of Science or equivalent.
- You have a sound understanding of Biorisk principles, policies and procedures as well as demonstrated knowledge of the standards and regulations associated with Biorisk and microbiological laboratories.
- You have excellent verbal and written communication skills and are able to work effectively within a team.
- You demonstrate effective problem solving and lateral thinking skills.
