Cadet Building Certifier

Graduate Program positions are available for recent Engineering or Town Planning graduates who are interested in a career in building certification, also known as building surveyors.

Building Certifiers are responsible for assessing, approving, and inspecting residential and commercial buildings. The role requires extensive knowledge about all fields of construction from hydraulic and electric fire safety systems, to waterproofing of basements, termite barriers in houses, structural construction of buildings, as well as disabled access, and much more. We provide building approvals required by builders for most building projects, by assessing plans and giving construction permits required before building works can proceed. This includes assessment against the Building Code of Australia, Australian Standards, and Town Planning Schemes.

Project BA is a Noosaville-based firm, but works on projects from Gold Coast to Gympie and is quickly expanding into other areas. The director has over 10 years of experience, is appointed by Queensland Government as a Development Tribunal member, and is currently elected as Branch Conveyor for AIBS Sunshine Coast branch. The team is made up of 17 staff aged from 21 to 32 years old. The Staff have a diverse skill range with mixed backgrounds in building, engineering, town planning, and drafting.

Role responsibilities vary day to day but will include:
Desktop work including:

- Assessing proposed plans and drafting formal documents for senior staff to review,
- Research and review of building codes, legislation, manufacturers specification or test data etc,
- Preparing, lodging, and negotiating town planning approvals with local government
- Drafting accurately documented reports, inspection records/notes, and correspondence.

On-site work including:

- Inspection of finished buildings
- Bushfire Assessments
- Problem-solving complex construction issues during construction

Requirements for the role:

- After the trial period, undertake the relevant Building Certification tertiary course, required to eventually become a licenced building certifier
- Be available to undertake full-time employment (part-time may be appropriate in some cases).
- Hold a current Qld Class C Driver licence
- Have good attention to detail with exceptional record-keeping and problem-solving skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Be willing to travel and undertake some overnight trips (expenses paid)
