**About the team**
The UWA Oceans Institute and School of Biological Sciences bring together the University of Western Australia’s multidisciplinary research strengths across areas including oceanography, ecology, engineering, resource management and governance to address key ocean challenges and generate solutions towards the sustainable use of ocean resources.
The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is a leader in tropical marine science. The Institute investigates topics from broad-scale ecology to microbiology. AIMS is committed to the protection and sustainable use of Australia’s marine resources.
**About the opportunity**
You will promote research projects via publications, presentations, and workshops, and support the transfer of research results into practice and policy recommendations.
In this important role you will work collaboratively with research staff at UWA and AIMS while also acquiring new data sets and developing your own area of research interest to further understand plastic pollution in northwest Australia.
**To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate**:
- A PhD in spatial marine ecology, remote sensing, biophysical modelling, ecotoxicology, or other related disciplines of applied marine research
- Demonstrated experience with GIS, in developing analytical approaches and reproducible workflows, and with using programming software such as Python or R
- Working knowledge of spectral characteristics of plastics or equivalent working/laboratory experience in identifying plastic debris
- Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, evidenced by published manuscripts and conference presentations
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
This role also provides the opportunity to lead fieldwork teams in remote locations. If you are successful, you will be required to travel occasionally for fieldwork or conferences. Flexibility of work hours can be offered in return.
