The Artwork Sculptor within the Artwork department is employed primarily to create concepts, designs and deliver artwork design of many mediums. The primary forms of artwork portrayed within Australia Zoo consists of Photography, Structural, Paintings, Drawings, Printmaking, Carving and most regularly Sculptors.

This position reports directly to the Head of Department and is relied upon for communicating their recommendations to the team to ensure they operate in the safest and most efficient manner.

To be successful in this role, you must have a demonstrated understanding of Australia Zoo’s Vision, Mission and Goals and Australia Zoo’s policy and procedures. You must have the ability to work within a collaborative team and may have specialised skills and qualifications/licences.

We are looking for someone with concrete sculpting experience, who is excited for a new and multifaceted challenge, in a unique workplace.

**Primary Duties -**
- Conceives and develops ideas, designs and styles for sculptures.
- Sketching designs of proposed sculptures, and making wood and plaster models.
- Devising forms from metal, using welding and metal working equipment and from stone, using masonry tools.
- Carve and form materials to the desired shapes using hand and power tools.
- Utilise tools such as chisels, gouges, and mallets to create objects and ensure all equipment is kept up to standard.
- Reference lifelike or living models while creating objects.
- Refer to photographs, plans or drawings of scenery for inspiration.
- Incorporate sound, light and motion into the artwork wherever applicable.
- Cut, twist, laminate, secure, and fasten raw and manufactured materials.
- Use hand tools to smooth out rough edges or carve details to ensure guest and animal safety.
- Cast sculptures in resin or concrete to create artwork.
- Teach about sculpting techniques and mediums to the remainder of the team, to provide an opportunity for assistance when required.
- Liaise closely with the Construction and Installation teams throughout Australia Zoo to ensure all deliverables are met.
- Liaise closely with members of other departments (Eg: Keeping teams) to ensure the requirements for enclosure design are met, and all safety elements are adhered to.
- Select materials for new projects and provide recommendations to the Head of Department.
- Assist within all artwork installations and projects, providing general labouring support to the wider team.

**Essential Criteria -**
This position requires:

- Full availability, including weekends, public holidays, and school holiday periods
- Excellent presentation and communication skills
- Hold current Manual Driver’s Licence
- Construction White Card (Induction Card)
- Artistic ability, and passion for creating artwork and sculptures

**Preferred Criteria -**
- Current Advanced First Aid and CPR Qualifications
- Any other relevant certificates
- Proof of Coronavirus Vaccination (unless otherwise exempt)
- Proof of Q-fever vaccination (unless otherwise exempt)
- Bachelor Degree in Fine Art or equivalent
