**Who we are**
The Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer (OCVO) works with national and international governments and industry partners to maximise trade opportunities for Australian producers and reduce risk to the agricultural sector. We ensure the international trading environment is operating appropriately and transparently, provide official declaration of Australia’s animal health status, represent Australia’s interests in the development of international standards for animal health, and fulfil Australia’s international disease reporting obligations. OCVO provides departmental leadership on foresight and intelligence gathering to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to emerging biosecurity threats; and work closely with health and environment agencies to mitigate emerging risks, including future pandemics of animal origin. We also work closely with Pacific Island countries to strengthen animal health systems throughout the region and enhance regional cooperation and partnerships.
**The Job**
We are seeking an experienced, focussed, and motivated veterinarian to manage a range of animal health matters relevant to One Health including pandemic prevention and antimicrobial resistance. The key duties include but are not limited to:
- providing high-level technical and policy inputs and advice to national and international forums related to One Health issues, with a focus on pandemic prevention and reducing zoonotic disease spillover, and antimicrobial resistance
- championing and influencing global reform to reduce pandemic risks associated with human use of wildlife
- supporting the Australian Chief Veterinary Officer to deliver national and international leadership and activities to address the threat of antimicrobial resistance
- providing technical support and advice to the Human Animal Spillover and Emerging Diseases Scanning group, including undertaking risk analyses on new and emerging threats identified by the group
- developing technical submissions, recommendations, briefings, and presentations on a range of One Health matters
- contributing to the One Health Surveillance Initiative - Enhancing Australia’s One Health Surveillance and Zoonotic Disease Prevention Capabilities
- providing detailed technical advice to Senior Executives, and internal and external stakeholders relevant to One Health approaches, systems, reform, programs, and policies.

- extensive knowledge of national and international One Health issues, current approaches and systems
**Eligibility**
**Mandatory qualifications**
To be considered for this position you must have a degree in Veterinary Science or Veterinary Medicine and Surgery from an Australian University or equivalent veterinary qualification recognised in Australia. You must be fully registered, or eligible for full registration, with the relevant Australian state/territory veterinary board and you must maintain this registration whilst employed by the department.
