**The Opportunity**
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is seeking skilled Assistant Directors to work across multiple legal and policy roles in the Trade & Investment Law Division, Regulatory & Legal Policy Division, and Legal Division. If you have strong legal or legal policy skills, can problem-solve, undertake complex analysis and craft timely advice, we want to hear from you.

As an Assistant Director, you will use your skills to inform government decisions and provide strategic legal and/or policy advice on issues that contribute to the development and implementation of DFAT’s foreign, trade and development policy and its global corporate management functions. These roles may see you negotiate, advise, and litigate on a diverse range of high profile international, trade, investment, and domestic law issues.

While some Assistant Director roles will require you to have a law degree and be admitted or eligible to be admitted to practice, other roles will not require formal legal qualifications, but a demonstrated understanding and familiarity with legal concepts and processes would be an advantage.

We are looking for team players with excellent communication skills, who can develop and maintain a wide-ranging network of internal and external stakeholders.

You will be able to build and maintain complex relationships with key stakeholders including other government agencies, industry, universities, and international counterparts and, in certain roles, to support international negotiations or litigation, and strengthen the multilateral system and bilateral relationships.

We also deal with sensitive issues, so you will need to manage risk effectively and show good judgement. At times we work to tight deadlines, so the ability to prioritise is needed.

Some Assistant Director roles will require relevant experience in providing legal advice, drafting legal documents, providing legal solutions for clients and/or managing litigation or other dispute resolution processes.
