**The Opportunity**

Do you have a passion for promoting a healthy, safe and sustainable teaching workforce that reflects the diversity of the Australian population? Do you want to make a contribution to knowledge through research?

Monash Education is offering two PhDs projects as part of the Education Workforce for the Future Laboratory on the related topics of teacher safety and expanding the cultural diversity of the teaching workforce. These are important topics in the current Australian context when i) increasing levels of violence, harassment and intimidation are threatening the health, safety and sustainability of our teaching workforce; ii) attracting and retaining teachers is a real challenge as teaching becomes a less attractive option, especially in hard to staff schools where there are concerns about teacher safety; (iii) teachers from diverse backgrounds are under-represented in the teaching workforce and often report feeling marginalised and unsafe; and (iv) concerns about the lack of diversity of the Australian teaching profession are ongoing.

2 x PhD scholarships for full-time research at postgraduate level. The awards are available to applicants intending to undertake a PhD with a focus on teacher safety (PhD 1) and the cultural diversity of the teaching workforce (PhD 2).

We are offering the following two PhD projects under the broader theme of promoting a healthy, safe and sustainable teaching workforce that reflects the diversity of the Australian population:
**Study 1: Examining physical and psycho-social threats to teacher safety**
Issues of teacher safety in school workplaces including issues of violence, threats, abuse and intimidation. The study would investigate how Australian teachers and schools are navigating these psycho-social and physical safety challenges, with a particular focus on innovative responses. Supervisors will be Dr Fiona Longmuir, Dr Stephanie Wescott and Professor Jane Wilkinson.

**Study 2: Attracting and retaining a culturally diverse teaching workforce - A question of cultural safety**
Ethnic and cultural diversity of the Australian teaching workforce with a focus on attracting and retaining a culturally diverse teaching workforce. The study would include innovative ways in which workplace environments can become more inclusive and supportive of diverse teachers in order to enhance their attraction to, and retention within the teaching workforce. Supervisors will be Professors Jane Wilkinson and Jo Lampert, and Dr Fiona Longmuir.

To be eligible you must:

- Have the necessary qualifications, such as a research masters, honours year or a qualification deemed equivalent by the Graduate Research Committee (or delegate) to meet the selection requirements into the doctoral program (see Monash University PhD entry requirements)
