**About the role**: The Victim Legal Service (VLS) is a collaborative initiative of the Victorian legal assistance sector. The VLS Helpline is operated by Victoria Legal Aid (VLA)'s Legal Help service, providing accessible and holistic intake, advice, and referral aimed at ensuring victims of crime are provided with culturally safe and trauma-informed services to support their legal and non-legal needs.In this role, you will provide legal advice and information to victims of crime and sexual harassment through various channels (phone, webchat, and in-person). You will provide assistance in matters relating to the rights of victims of crime and sexual harassment in protecting confidential communications during court proceedings, compensation, restitution and financial assistance, and a range of ancillary legal matters in the family, criminal and/or civil law jurisdictions. You will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders and partners in providing a culturally safe and trauma-informed service.This role does not involve ongoing casework or court advocacy.
This role is based at our Melbourne CBD office on Wurundjeri Country
About Legal HelpThe Legal Help service is the key entry point for Victorians seeking legal assistance via telephone and webchat. The aim is to provide an accessible, holistic triage, intake and referral service which ensures that people are not put on a ‘referral roundabout'. Legal Help assists over 132,000 Victorians over the telephone, webchat and in-person each year, providing information, legal advice and referrals on a wide variety of legal issues.Legal Help operates as a contact centre, using cloud-based software. This offers greater flexibility of location for staff and extra channels for help seekers, including a ‘legal webchat' channe
- Knowledge and practical experience in criminal law and relevant court procedures.
- Practical knowledge of law and procedure in Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal (VOCAT) and/or Restitution and Compensation Order (RACO) matters, and a range of ancillary legal matters in family, criminal and/or civil law.
- Demonstrated high level legal diagnostic and problem-solving skills to accurately assess and address client needs, with an understanding of the principles associated with trauma-informed practice when providing client services.
