**Position Purpose**

To provide technical services and be responsible for the organization of nominated laboratory
sessions, in the discipline of Parasitology, within the undergraduate practical classes in Veterinary
Medicine and Medical, Molecular and Forensic Sciences.

**About the Work Area**

The Technical Services team has the responsibility for operating and maintaining undergraduate
teaching labs along with preparing, developing, designing, and constructing experiments.
Whether teaching, research, or external engagement activities the group manages the technical
requirements that service the needs of the University community.

Technical Officer - Parasitology and Molecular Genetics

**Key Responsibilities/Duties**

1. Responsible for the preparation and set up of materials, reagents, specimens, and equipment

for undergraduate practical classes in Parasitology and Diagnostic Genomics.

2. Responsible for maintenance of the Parasitology databases, Teaching Resource Collections

and Photographic library collections.

3. Curator of the Parasitology Museum. Responsible for the upkeep and preparation of new and

existing specimens and maintaining museum records.

4. Responsible for the routine preparation and processing of clinical specimens and the

interpretation of results for the Parasitology Diagnostic Service.

5. Source and collect equipment, samples, and specimens for practical classes.

6. Provide technical and procedural advice and expertise to academic staff, undergraduate and

postgraduate students in laboratory procedures for teaching, research, and diagnostic
purposes for the discipline.

7. Oversee the development and refinement of undergraduate practical classes to improve

student-learning outcomes in Parasitology and Diagnostic Genomic related units.

8. Assist in the preparation and set up of materials, reagents, specimens, and equipment for

undergraduate practical classes in Laboratory Medicine and Veterinary Medicine units across
the broader team.

9. Assist with, other duties as required. Provide technical support to research and other

engagement activities of the discipline.

10. Prepare and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for laboratory operations.

11. Maintain accurate records of chemical stocks, hazardous substances, and SDS and risk

assessments in accordance with University OSH policy.

12. Establish procedures and protocols for the maintenance and services of laboratory

equipment.

13. Responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Perform

routine troubleshooting and problem solving, organise maintenance schedules, non-routine
repairs and liaise with service companies.

14. Support and promote compliance with relevant legislation and University policies and
