About us As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service, and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders. QFES is one department with many services, many capabilities and many partners. Purpose of the role Reporting to the Commissioner, QFES, you will be responsible for providing strategic operational and corporate advice in relation to matters impacting across the service, including providing timely and informed advice to the Office of the Minister, Fire and Emergency Services other political office holders, community organisations, key client groups, and other senior departmental officers as appropriate on behalf of the Commissioner. The role has full responsibility and delegated accountability for all operational and financial aspects of the function and supervises staff, resources, systems and processes within the Office of the Commissioner. **The Chief of Staff is also responsible for**: - developing media responses in partnership with Media and Communications - ensuring the integration of policy, executive decisions and activities across the department align with corporate business objectives. Your key accountabilities Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to: - Provide the Commissioner with high level and comprehensive assessment, advice, options and support in relation to existing and emerging strategic issues. - Facilitate the introduction of executive directions, policy and decisions across the department. - Develop and maintain strong cooperative working relationships with senior officers and other stakeholders. - Manage and negotiate appropriate responses and time frames on behalf of the Commissioner. - Monitor department activities and manage resources and work volumes effectively in an environment of competing demands and tight deadlines. - Provide professional, timely and informed advice on departmental issues to all stakeholders - Utilise effective negotiation and conflict resolution skills. - Assist or represent the Commissioner on internal, intra and/or interstate forums, and promote opportunities for achieving quality service outcomes.
