**The Opportunity**:
We are currently hiring for a highly driven and motivated Head of Design (HoD) to lead our digital design capability that sits in Data61’s Engineering and Design (E&D) program, alongside Product Management and Engineering teams. The HoD will lead a growing community of design specialists at Data61 whose primary focus is to align our innovative science & technology with real-world problems by maintaining a deep connection to customer and user needs.

**Your duties will include**:

- Work with the E&D Director to define and evolve the program strategy and provide direction for design teams on their role in achieving its objectives.
- Leverage contacts and build networks to develop the opportunity pipeline, collaborating with E&D Leaders to define key design resources needed for priority programs and contributing short term advisory in their formative stages.
- Direct and coordinate the workforce strategy & planning and lead all recruitment and hiring activities for the design group, aligning with group and program objectives to understand the skills needed to deliver value now and in the future.
- Define Design team structures and positions, as well as the roles and responsibilities for each level of seniority (mapped to CSOF classifications) in order to attract, develop and retain world class talent that will meet the current and future needs of E&D.
- Collaborate with the Design Thinking Practice Lead and Design Leads to provide an inspiring and supportive design culture, initiating regular opportunities for both in person and remote knowledge sharing and skills building.
- Create an enriching Learning & Development program for design practitioners of all skill levels to develop their professional practice and upskill in areas of interest and growth both for the individual and the organisation.
- Work with the E&D Director to create a program of regular feedback mechanisms that can monitor performance and manage impact outcomes proactively.

**Salary**: AU$146,207 - AU$161,767 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

**To be considered you will need**:
Essential Criteria
- A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent career-informed skills development in design, with hands-on commercial or applied experience in a range of production environments and demonstrated achievement in senior advisory and/or managerial roles.
A minimum of 10 years relevant professional career experience as a ‘generalist’ design practitioner developing digital and data products.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex stakeholder and partner relationships across both government and industry.
- A strong history of influencing staff in observing corporate and professional standards, acting as trusted advisers, fostering effective client relationships, and ensuring alignment between client needs and CSIRO’s research objectives.
- A significant record of innovation and creativity plus the ability and willingness to incorporate and/or promote the inclusion of novel ideas and approaches into projects of all sizes and scale.
- A strong history of advocating and educating on the practice of design and communicating its value, with the objective of uplifting design maturity within an organisation.
- Ability to work effectively with a number of key support teams and personnel across CSIRO (HR, Finance, HSE, etc) and manage evolving operational structures and processes proactively and efficiently.
