Space Machines Company (SMC) is an Australian start-up developing in-space logistics and transportation capabilities to cost-effectively insert small satellites into desired low earth orbits (LEO), geostationary earth orbits (GEO) and lunar orbits. SMC vehicles will grow in future to maintain, refuel, repair and decommission satellites and other spacecraft.
THE ROLE
In this Adelaide based position, you will be a part of the Mission Operations team. As a Mission Systems Software Operator you will be responsible for developing and executing the flight and mission plans of our spacecraft, including pre-launch test & validation, ground segment readiness, spacecraft launch activation, and in-flight spacecraft operations and control to deliver efficient, effective and safe mission operations whilst ensuring success for our customers and partners.
**The role will include**:
- Preparation, execution, and maintenance of operational documentation and flight procedures (Flight Operational Handbook, Mission Operations Plan, Commissioning and Decommissioning Plans, etc);
- Execute, Launch and Early Operations Phase activities and routine operations;
- Perform full stack software development tasks using one or more of the following; Grafana, Cesium, Unity, Python, Matlab, Rust, C.
- Perform real-time spacecraft and payload subsystems trending and performance analysis, and troubleshoot anomalies.
- Perform spacecraft operations in real time, including after hours and extended hours during mission critical operations;
- Develop, test, and validate operational tools and scripts to increase operational efficiency and mission availability in a fast-paced agile environment;
- Manage and update mission databases for spacecraft command and telemetry data;
- Ensure operational products adhere to engineering best practices and following configuration management using Git, Jenkins, and Jira.

PROFILE
Ideally, you would have completed a software or systems engineering university program and/or have a background in a related technical industry. You will have an understanding and passion for complex data systems and multidisciplinary engineering. You will need to work with the mission management team as well as engage with spacecraft engineering and subsystem specialists in the spacecraft integration phase, as well as with payload customers on flight operational considerations.
You will be able to undertake full stack software development and integration tasks to support new missions and increase future capability and operational efficiency. You will need the ability to work in a start-up environment and grow with us as our capabilities expand. Communication and team building skills will be key to the success of this role, and we expect you to be proactive, creative, enthusiastic and results oriented.
Some interstate and international travel may be required for the role. The ability and willingness to obtain an Australian Defence security clearance will be a benefit, but not essential.
