We are seeking to appoint an Associate to support His Honour Judge Higham, Head of the Drug and Alcohol Treatment Court, for a fixed term contract of 12 months (with the possibility of extension).
The County Court of Victoria has original and appellate jurisdiction and is the principal trial court in Victoria.
The Drug and Alcohol Treatment Court (DATC) is an integral part of the Court's work. As a pilot program, the DATC is currently being embedded as a crucial therapeutic alternative in this jurisdiction. The DATC's foundational purpose is to promote rehabilitation and, in doing so, to protect the community from further substance driven offending. DATC Participants engage in an integrated and intensive program, supervised by the Court, to address their drug and alcohol dependency.
As one of two Associates you will provide operational, administrative, and technical legal support to the Judge both in chambers and in court. The role involves case file management, a strong emphasis on communication at all levels, and legal research and writing. As part of His Honour's role as Head of the DATC, you will also be required to work closely with a multidisciplinary team to support the DATC participants' ongoing judicial management.
The successful applicant will have a demonstrated interest in criminal law, an ability to perform under pressure and the capacity to work well in a small team.
