**The Position**
Heads of Department are responsible for building a strong inclusive and positive relationship with their team
and supporting each student academically and pastorally. As a Head of Department, you will be an experienced
educator and exceptional classroom practitioner, possess strong administration and organisational skills, be
able to manage multiple priorities and will have the ability to provide inspirational, instructional leadership to
your team.
**Responsible To**
This position will be responsible to the Deputy Principal and ultimately to the Principal. All Heads of Department
are members of the School’s Academic Leadership Team.
**Terms**
The position of Head of Department attracts a leadership time allowance, dependent upon the size and scope
of the department. Appointments are for an initial period of up to three years, renewable by mutual agreement.
The responsibilities of the position means that Heads of Department may be required to be present at School
before and beyond the regular timetabled day and during non-term time. This position also has an after-hours
component.

Head of Department
**Specific Duties**
**Key Objectives**
Heads of Department will be expected to carry out the following key duties:
- Support the School Executive by contributing to the development of the total ethos of the School
- Lead, develop and manage teaching staff within departmental responsibility
- Lead department meetings that focus on professional learning and sharing of teaching strategies and
- resources- Implement and manage all aspects of departmental curriculum in accordance with the requirements of
- the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) including new/changed syllabus requirements- Manage incursions/excursions within departmental responsibility to support and enrich student
- learning (where applicable)- Develop curriculum within departmental responsibility
- Ensure the delivery of differentiated teaching within departmental responsibility
- Work to achieve strategic outcomes in accordance with the School’s Strategic Plan
**Educational/Professional Experience**
- Experience/expertise with all levels of the curriculum associated with department
- Tertiary qualifications relevant to department
- Accreditation to teach in NSW at a minimum of Proficient level
- Knowledge and experience to ensure compliance with NESA requirements
- Understand the legislation and policies that impact on schooling especially in relation to students and
- staff within the department- Proven experience in assisting students to achieve high level academic outcomes
- Professional engagement in learning through wide reading
- Previous experience in a leadership position within a school environment (desirable)
- Masters degree in an educational discipline (desirable)
**Special Requirements**
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written and the ability to communicate at all levels
across the School
- Commitment to collegial involvement with the Academic Executive
- Capability to lead and contribute to ongoing school improvement through evidence based
