About us
The County Court of Victoria is established pursuant to the County Court Act 1958. It has original and appellate jurisdiction and is the principal trial court in the State of Victoria. The Court hears over 11,000 criminal, common law and commercial cases each year. Since 1 January 2007, the County Court has enjoyed unlimited monetary jurisdiction in civil matters. Essentially the County Court has been given concurrent jurisdiction with the Supreme Court in all commercial litigation.
Subsequent to the abolition of the monetary limit, and the appointment of judges with commercial experience, the commercial work of the court has grown in both size and complexity, with over 2500 commercial initiations.
About the role
The Commercial Division is an efficient jurisdiction for the resolution of commercial disputes in Victoria.
Judge Burchell's Associate will play an important role in case management of proceedings in the BCL and Building Property List in VCAT. Her role within the Commercial Division as JIC includes determining orders on the papers, conducting directions hearings, conducting judicial resolution conferences and trials. Her Associate provides operational, administrative and technical support both in chambers and in court. The role involves case file management, liaising with other support staff, the BCL User's Group and practitioners and a strong emphasis on communication at all levels.
As Acting HOD, her Honour is active in reforming Court procedures, working collaboratively with the Commercial Registry and the Court's executive to ensure efficient and effective systems of work and the listings of trials. Experience and interest in commercial litigation, interlocutory and trial procedures and mediation will be highly valued.
